Gov. Jon Corzine's budget plan can be described in many ways. Most of them aren't very flattering, or even printable. And some of its deficiencies aren't entirely his fault.
But his effort to characterize the plan as protection for the middle class is disingenuous at best. It does nothing of the sort. In fact, it hits the middle class harder than any other group.
Consider, foinstance, some of the highlight provisions of the proposal. Property tax rebates are being eliminated for families earning more than $75,000, and slashed by a third for those between $50,000 and $75,000. That's a whole lot of middle class getting blasted.
Seniors are exempted from the cuts, so they're being protected to a degree. So are the poor. Higher-income earners are protected in part by their own wealth. So the middle class isn't only getting hit the hardest, they'll also feel it the most.
